Catholic Wedding at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Pueblo, CO

Sienna and Keith were married at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pueblo, Colorado. The day had everything I love about a Catholic wedding: a beautiful old church, a meaningful ceremony tradition, and a reception where nobody sat down for long. I photographed and filmed the whole day, so they have both the photos and a wedding film to look back on.

A Gothic Revival cathedral in the heart of Pueblo

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart sits on West 11th Street in downtown Pueblo. It was dedicated in 1913 and has been the cathedral of the Diocese of Pueblo since 1941. It’s a Gothic Revival church with a tall spire, pointed arch windows and a soaring vaulted ceiling, and it’s on the National Register of Historic Places.
For a photographer, a church like this does a lot of the work. The long center aisle frames the processional, and the vaulted ceiling gives every wide shot a sense of scale.

The rosary lasso

One of my favorite moments of the day was the lasso. In this tradition, often placed by the couple’s sponsors after the vows, a large rosary is draped in a figure eight over the bride’s and groom’s shoulders. It’s a symbol of two lives joined together, and of a marriage held in prayer.
It happens quietly and it’s over quickly, so I plan for it ahead of time. I make sure I’m positioned to see both faces and the full loop of the rosary, without stepping into the sanctuary.

Portraits along the Pueblo Riverwalk

After the ceremony we headed to the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo for portraits. The water, bridges and brick buildings give a lot of variety in a short walk, and it’s right next to the reception venue. That means more time for photos and less time in the car.

A reception full of dancing at the Pueblo Convention Center

The reception was at the Pueblo Convention Center, and once the dance floor opened, it stayed full. Sienna and Keith’s guests came ready to celebrate, and my photo booth was busy all night. Their guests went home with prints, and the couple got a gallery of every goofy, happy booth photo.

Sienna and Keith’s wedding film

I filmed their day too, so the vows, the lasso and the dancing live on in a film as well as photos. Having one team for both means nothing gets missed and nobody gets in each other’s way. You can read more about how that works in How Hybrid Coverage Keeps You in the Moment.

Planning a Catholic wedding at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart?

Talk to the cathedral early. Ask the wedding coordinator about photo and video rules, including where a photographer can stand during Mass.
Plan your timeline around the Mass. A Nuptial Mass runs longer than a ceremony without Mass, so build that into the day.
Save time for family portraits at the church. The cathedral’s front steps and center aisle make great backdrops for big family groups.
Let your photographer know about traditions. The lasso, the arras (coins) or a Marian devotion all happen quickly. Knowing ahead means they get photographed well.

I’m a Colorado Springs wedding photographer and videographer, and I photograph Catholic weddings across Southern Colorado, from Pueblo to Colorado Springs and Denver. I know the flow of a Mass and how to work respectfully inside a church. If you’re planning a church wedding, see my collections or check your date.
