As a professional photographer with over a decade of experience, I’ve put together a quick list of 5 things to make your engagement photos the best they can be!

Your Engagement Photos should be a reflection of you!

1. Plan Your Goal
You should talk about what you want to get out of your engagement photos. This includes how you’ll use them (save the date cards, invitations, signing book, wall art…), as well as what you want to remember about this unique chapter of your relationship. Be specific with this step, putting this into words will help you communicate with your photographer what you hope to capture.

2. Pick your vibe
Your vibe will help determine your location, outfits, and poses, which all add to the overall feeling of engagement photos. Your vibe should reflect who you are as a couple. Are you going for a candid rustic vibe, or a more strong elegant vibe? Do you like to goof around with your fiance, are you more homebodies or do you like to get out? To make sure your engagement photos fit your style, think of these things when chatting with photographers.

3. Bring more than just yourselves
To make your engagement photos even more personalized, bring additional jewelry, accessories, or whole outfits. These are great ways to add your own personal flair to your session. And don’t forget your 4 legged family members. Including dogs, even for just a few photos, makes your portraits feel complete.

4. Clean your Ring
You’ll get a few ring shots during your engagement session. Make sure your get your rings polished by a professional a day or two before your session, moisturize your hands, and make sure your nails look nice. These are small details, but really do make a big difference when getting a close up photo of your ring.

5. Remember to relax
Easier said than done, but a few tips to help with this is to:

  • Lay out your outfits a day before, making sure you have everything, down to the right shoes. And you can see if any of your clothes need to be ironed.
  • Get plenty of sleep the night before your session. This will help you look and feel your best.
  • Plan out your meals. plan to eat, even just a snack, before your session so that you don’t crash in the middle of it.
