Engagement photo session at Cheyenne Canyon and Stratton Open Space, Colorado Springs, CO

For Sarah and Mo’s engagement session, we started in North Cheyenne Cañon Park, surrounded by the peaceful forests and greenery that make this part of Colorado Springs so beautiful. Their pup, Edna, joined us for the session—and, naturally, she quickly became the star of the show.
A Romantic Engagement Session in Cheyenne Canyon
One of my favorite things about photographing couples in Cheyenne Canyon is the variety of scenery. The wooded trails create a soft, intimate atmosphere that feels completely different from the wide-open landscapes Colorado is known for.
Sarah and Mo looked right at home surrounded by the trees. The greenery provided a beautiful, natural backdrop while the soft, filtered light coming through the forest kept their images romantic and relaxed.
One of the highlights of the location is a charming stone bridge that crosses a clear mountain brook. It’s one of those little spots that feels incredibly romantic without needing much decoration or posing. The combination of the stone, water, trees, and natural light creates a timeless backdrop for engagement photography.
And then there was Edna.
Sarah and Mo’s poodle mix absolutely stole the show. Including your dog in your engagement photos is one of my favorite ways to make a session feel personal. Rather than leaving an important member of the family at home, we can build time into the session for a few photos together before focusing on just the two of you.
From Forests to Open Fields at Stratton Open Space
For the second half of Sarah and Mo’s engagement session, we headed just up the road to Stratton Open Space.
The change in scenery was dramatic.
While Cheyenne Canyon gave us dense forests, greenery, and intimate surroundings, Stratton Open Space offered wide-open fields and tall grasses. This contrast is one of the reasons I love combining nearby locations during a Colorado Springs engagement session.
The open landscape also gave us room to take advantage of the evening light.
Sunset Engagement Photos in Colorado Springs
By the time we reached Stratton Open Space, we were getting that beautiful late-evening glow that makes sunset engagement photography so special.
The sky took on soft pink tones as the sun went down, adding another layer of warmth and romance to Sarah and Mo’s photos. The tall grass moving in the breeze and the expansive Colorado landscape created a completely different feeling from the quiet forest we had just left.
Instead of having an engagement gallery where every image looks the same, we ended up with a collection that told a little story: quiet moments in the forest, playful photos with Edna, wide-open Colorado landscapes, and a romantic sunset to finish the evening.
